The Hunger Games / Book 1
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Orientation: Heterosexual. As the story progresses, she begins to develop feelings for strictly males. The book is told from her perspective, and she never hints to being attracted to any female.
History: the girl on fire.Appearance: WE'RE THE KIDS OF AMERICA, WHOA-OHHHPersonality: Katniss is a survivor. This is immediately apparent, from the first few pages of the book. Despite living in near destitute, under a totalitarian and oppressive government, she perseveres. Her main concern has and always will be the preservation of herself, her friends, and her family. She goes so far as to break laws punishable by death nearly every day, just to get extra food for her family. Along with this, she's signed up for tesserae numerous times each year, meaning her name will be put into the ballot for the Hunger Games multiple times in exchange for extra food.
Katniss is defined by her relationships with those around her; she is an incredibly grateful and appreciative person, someone who values what she's been given, even if it isn't much, and others notice this. Despite being a quiet girl, many of the townspeople admire Katniss. She's brave. She's defiant. She helps the townspeople through selling some of her game in the black market. Peeta's father even offers to help feed her family while she's away, at the Hunger Games. She's the type of person who remembers even tiny things that people do for her, such as when Peeta gave her two loaves of burnt bread years prior to the first book. Because of this, she instantly feels the need to help Peeta survive as long as possible, even though the two of them are to be enemies in the arena.
However, she remembers the bad things, too. While Katniss is a forgiving person, she can also harbor grudges; she is very resentful of her mother for a long time due to her longstanding depression and catatonia, post her father's death. Katniss had to take care of her family alone due to this, which is why she began to hunt at the unripened age of 11. She's also haunted by the memories of her father; she'll often have nightmares involving him, and the mine that exploded and killed her father.
Katniss is a wary, almost paranoid person, though considering her circumstances, it's understandable. Even at 11, she was wary of Gale, and was initially very bitter towards him. However, she later warmed up to him and they became best friends. Katniss needs a lot of time to get used to others before she fully opens up to them. She often doubts others' motives, such as the other contestants in the Hunger Games. They're all out to kill her, right? So why would they be nice to her? She is cautious, and almost always has her guard up, except when in the sole presence of someone she trusts and feels comfortable around. Still, she is a naturally tense person due to the burdens put upon her shoulders. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze people and situations, which can at times get her in to trouble.
Despite her cautious nature, she has flights of rage and impulse, as well. In the first book, she shoots a pig being eaten by the gamemakers because they were not paying any attention to her, a very risky thing to do. She also does not hesitate to resort to violence when angered. In fact, it's basically her first choice.
Katniss is extremely selfless, and would do anything for those she loves, even sacrifice herself. In the second book, she realizes that she does have feelings for Peeta, so when they are both chosen to participate in the Quarter Quell, she promises herself to keep him alive.. to make him the victor, even if it would mean her death.
One of the most notable and important facets of her personality concerns Katniss's innate charisma. She's a quiet person; in fact, she would prefer not to be bothered. She can actually be pretty intimidating, and seem like a giant grump. In general, she is not worried about others, just her core group of friends and family. But when she does speak her opinions, when she does sing, when does show any sign of rebellion.. even nature is moved. People follow Katniss. People respect Katniss. She is the hope everyone has been waiting for.
Abilites: Katniss is,largely, a normal human with normal abilities. However, she can do a few things normal people can't. She is skilled with the bow, with snares, and at identifying plants. She's quite the outdoorsman.
Other: SAMPLESFirst Person: accidental voice.Peeta? Where are you? We were.. just on the train. We were on the way home. Where
are you?[ Have a very antsy sounding girl. There's gasps of panic, and a lot of static. It seems she's shuffling around, unaware of the device she's carrying. ]Where.. is this? This isn't the Capitol.. is it?
[ You never know. It could be another arena. Another sound of shuffling. ] What's this key? Is it.. for the house?
[ Silence. After a while, footsteps are audible. Then, the sound of lock pins twisting. After that, the feed shuts off. ]Third Person: This place was bright. So.. green. Full of colors Katniss had never seen in real life; just in picture books. To be honest, she didn't think colors like this
occurred in nature.
And she was right. Upon closer inspection, she realized the grass was fake. Turf. It was a little unsettling, and made her feel like this place was some sort of construct set up by the Capitol more and more. But then, she knew that couldn't be true. No matter how much the Capitol resented her, Peeta.. They would keep them alive and well, at least until the victory tour was said and done.
But
still, it was hard to shake the feeling. It was cloying, and sat in the back of her head, slowly working it's way forward. For now, Katniss rummaged through the cabinets of her new 'house' carefully, managing to find some hot chocolate. She raised a brow, and slowly took it out to inspect the powder.
"How is it made from this..? Do you dissolve the powder?"
The curiosity got the better of her. She grabbed a glass, waited for the sink water to heat up (way faster than it did back home), and poured the powder in. After it was done, she opened the packet and dumped the powder in gingerly. She watched as she stirred and stirred, and the water turned blacker and blacker, until.. it was one. Steam rose from the concoction. Warily, she picked up the liquid.. sniffed. It was hot chocolate, there was no doubt. She took a careful sip.. and let out a satisfied huff. It had been a while since she had anything besides water.
She felt very silly, but comforted, somehow. The heat of the hot chocolate oozed into her head, slowly pushing back her worries. For the moment, at least.
